Community Foundation Boot Camp

Community Foundation of Henderson County is hosting Community Foundation Boot Camp October 14-15, 2026.

Over two days in beautiful Hendersonville, NC, you'll have the opportunity to connect with community foundation peers while learning the what, why and how of these unique philanthropic organizations from an expert faculty from Indiana Philanthropy Alliance. Perfect for newer staff and board members, or anyone looking to refresh their knowledge or advance thoughtfulness in Community Foundation work!

  • Grantmaking 
  • Community Leadership
  • Operational Sustainability

Throughout the Boot Camp, you’ll learn how community foundations play a vital role throughout the region, not only as place-based funders but also as highly visible institutions that provide leadership, create pathways to charitable giving, and work with a variety of partners across multiple sectors.  

Event Details

  • Commuter: $825 (includes meals)
  • Full Registration: $1350 (includes lodging at Kanuga Oct. 13 & 14, and meals)

Schedule: Community Foundation Boot Camp takes place over two full days, beginning at 8:00am ET on Wednesday, October 14, and concluding at 4:00pm ET on Thursday, October 15. Please plan your travel accordingly. Full agenda to come.

Hotel & Venue: We have secured lodging at the picturesque Kanuga Inn & Suites at Kanuga Conferences. Training, meals, and lodging will take place at Kanuga. Learn more about Kanuga here.

Meals included in registration are:

  • Oct. 13 - Dinner
  • Oct. 14 -Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner
  • Oct. 15- Breakfast & Lunch

We will host a reception the evening of October 14. Early check in (Oct. 13) is included with Full Registration (non-commuter) pricing. Once you are checked in you have access to the entire conference center grounds, hiking trails, and lake side. (The evening of the 15th is not included in the cost of registration, please let us know upon or after registration if you need additional room accommodations).

About the Presenters

Sonya Baker Hallett, Program Advisor, Indiana Philanthropy Alliance (IPA)

Sonya began her philanthropy career in 1995. She taught as adjunct faculty with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, created and lead Franklin College’s nonprofit certification, directed IPA’s Indiana Giving Ventures, and served on the Johnson County Community Foundation’s board for ten years before becoming the foundation’s president/CEO. Sonya has compiled, edited, and published an extensive guidebook for families to consider charitable estate planning. She is also a longtime board member of JCCF, co-founder of the Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana, president of Bowlingtown Heritage Association and Delta Delta Delta Alumnae Association, and a volunteer for several other local and state organizations. Sonya is an alumna of Franklin College, Leadership Johnson County, and the University of Indianapolis as well as working toward an MBA with Miami University. She resides in Greenwood (Center Grove), Indiana, and Clearwater, Florida.

Eric Hessel, CFRM, Vice President of Programs, Hendricks County Community Foundation.

Eric Hessel started working with the Community Foundation in 2003 as a youth grantmaker and has since worked in both the direct service and funding areas of nonprofits. Prior to joining HCCF full time, Eric worked in youth programming and with the US Census Bureau, in addition to building relationships in the local community that assist in strategic and effective grantmaking decisions. Eric grew up in Pittsboro and currently lives in Carmel, IN with his two dogs.

Terri Johnson Former IPA Director, GIFT Program Indiana Philanthropy Alliance

Before joining IPA in 2013 as GIFT Associate Director, Terri was the Executive Director of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation (NICF) in Rochester, Indiana, for ten years. Prior to becoming the executive director, she served as NICF board member while also co-owner of her family business. Terri has served on several community nonprofit boards, including Fulton Economic Development Corp. and Fulton County Leadership Academy. She is an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. She is a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University and International Business College. She holds degrees in business management and accounting
