Since 1993, Community Foundation of Henderson County has been celebrating individuals who provide outstanding leadership through their personal philanthropic efforts in Henderson County.

2024 Sauer Charitable Leadership Award

Cam & Sally Boyd

Lewis “Cam” Boyd, Jr. and Sarah “Sally” Boyd were honored with the Sauer Charitable Leadership Award for their lifelong commitment to service, generosity, and community impact. A Hendersonville native and veteran, Cam devoted his life to local progress through business, education, and civic leadership. He supported initiatives like the Hendersonville High School expansion and established a scholarship at Blue Ridge Community College. Sadly, Cam passed away shortly after learning of the award, which stands as a fitting tribute to his legacy.

Sally Boyd, equally devoted to the community, played a key role in preserving natural spaces like the Park at Flat Rock and supported numerous local organizations. Together, the Boyds chose impact over recognition, shaping Henderson County through their generosity, vision, and the simple philosophy: “Why would I not?”

Dorothy Dellinger "Dot" Marlow

Dorothy Dellinger "Dot" Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award

At Community Foundation, we often refer to Dot as our "founding lady." She joined our organization at a pivotal time, serving as the first female board member, bringing with her the spark that would ignite everything to come. To honor Dot, the Foundation established the Dot Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award in 2019.

Shirley McGee

Shirley McGee, a lifelong educator and community leader from Henderson County, embodies the spirit of servant leadership honored by the Dot Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award. Over four decades, she impacted countless lives as an English teacher and principal at Fletcher Elementary before retiring in 2007. She was named Henderson County’s 1988 Teacher of the Year and inducted into the Henderson County Education Hall of Fame in 2015. Her “Rugby Days,” remembered for fostering responsibility and care, still resonate with former students.

In retirement, Shirley continues to serve through nonprofit volunteer efforts, from tending the garden at Historic Johnson Farm to advocating for future generations. Her belief in “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see” reflects a lasting legacy of nurturing growth and community.
