2010 ANNUAL LUNCHEON Wednesday, August 18, 2010 Kenmure Country Club.
Approximately 150 friends and supporters of the Community Foundation of Henderson County gathered for the Annual Luncheon which was held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Kenmure Country Club.
The Community Foundation of Henderson County’s 2010 Annual Luncheon encouraged attendees to turn their philanthropic passion into action. Don and Lisbeth Cooper founders of CooperRiis, a Healing Community in Mill Spring, NC shared their personal uplifting story of giving while living and making a difference with something you are truly passionate about. The Cooper’s were the 2009 recipients of WNC AFP Philanthropists of the Year Award and Lisbeth was also named one of four “Shining Stars of 2005” in Woman’s Day Magazine.
McCray Benson, President/CEO of the Foundation highlighted the 2009-2010 Fiscal Year accomplishments noting that the Foundation received Contributions of $1.1M; issued Grants in the amount of $2.0 M with more than 97% distributed into our local communities and holds total assets of more than $61.8M. Several new funds were also highlighted and the attendees learned that there are more than 450 funds at the Community Foundation to assist anyone with their visionary philanthropy or to start growing a new effort.
Gus Campano was recognized as outgoing chair and provided highlights of his tenure from 2008-2010. Jana Johnson Humleker was introduced as the incoming board chair for the 2010-2012 fiscal years. Chair Humleker stated “the Foundation is made up of many talents and treasures. Over the 28 year history of the Foundation more than 111 individuals have served as board members, add in the committee volunteers and that number grows to multiple hundreds. Add donors and our community of philanthropists is in the thousands. There is a power that comes with being a philanthropists but it is only given strength in how we connect with others that actually creates the difference that philanthropy makes. No one alone accomplishes that difference it is how we connect as community that yields and supports accomplishments. It is the strength to be forever caring – forever giving.”
The Foundation’s highest award was also presented at the luncheon, The Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award. The Sauer Award is named after Richard and Vina Sauer, who generously supported many local charities and honors local philanthropists who provide outstanding leadership or make significant charitable contributions to benefit our community. The Community Foundation established the Sauer award in 1993, as a memorial to Richard and Vina Sauer, local philanthropists who made a difference in Henderson County. The Community Foundation requests nominations from the community for review and then selects a recipient.
The Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award for 2010 was presented to Teddi Segal. Pat Jones, Chair of the Recognition Committee stated “simply put, this person is a woman, “who acts selflessly, without compensation, without fuss and without fanfare. Remarkable on many fronts, she is unassuming paragon of virtue. We are blessed to have her in our community. Here is a life that deserves recognition, appreciation and admiration for her ideals and philanthropic efforts.”
